Winning Schoolchildren Share Meaningful Lessons Learned From Loved Ones

In the spirit of promoting intergenerational awareness, the Glen Cove Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation sponsored an essay contest entitled “The Most Important Lesson I Learned From My Grandfather, Grandmother, or Any Other Older Adult” that showcased the writing skills of the Glen Cove and Jericho school children.

Hundreds of talented students in grades 3-5 from Glen Cove and Jericho Elementary schools, submitted essays detailing significant lessons they learned from their elders. SIgnificant lessons learned included “Everyone messes up sometimes, since no one’s perfect” and” Don’t judge someone by how they look, it’s what’s inside that counts”. Sixteen submissions were selected based on the criteria that they were either funny, touching, philosophical or meaningful.

A recognition ceremony for the winning students, their parents and respective teachers, was held at the Glen Cove Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation on Thursday evening, April 1. An award was presented to each winner along with a gift certificate and two passes to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City.
